Why have I never been married?

Because I’m still waiting for Jack.

Don’t know who Jack is? You clearly have not seen this movie. Or you haven’t seen it as many times as I have.

Seriously. This is possibly my favorite movie of all time. It’s certainly in my top 5, along with It’s a Wonderful Life and the BBC version of Jane Eyre starring Timothy Dalton. Yes, all of my favorite movies are, at their heart, love stories. And Jack Callaghan, as portrayed by Bill Pullman, is the hero I relate to the most and continue to wait for.

Why? He’s handsome, but not intimidatingly so. He’s sensitive and funny and he listens well. He’s someone you could laugh with. He’s real.

OK, so he’s not real. I do recognize that he’s a character in a romantic comedy. But he is the kind of real hero I’m looking for. (Hm. Maybe I don’t really want to be in love; I want to be in love in a movie.*)

Either way, I am in love with Jack. Whether or not he actually exists. If you know where he is, convince him to break up with the perfect model he’s with and send him my way, OK? 🙂

*Bonus points if you know from which movie I’m quoting!

Not sure of the movie, but I like the line.

I feel the same as you. Even after I “settled” in marriage (and thankfully ended up with the most wonderful son) and am in the midst of divorce. What I wanted (and thought I’d found) and still want now…is Jack. I want the leaning. I want the “I can screw up but still make you feel like you’re more important than my ego”. I want Jack. Not the actor, but the idea of him.

    1. Amy says:

Stormy, I love that: “I want the leaning.” Amen.

    Quote’s from sleepless in seattle.

omg i love Jack. my bff and i still refer to “the Jack look” from that movie when he has this smitten, crushed expression at the wedding when lucy’s confessing….so irresistible!

I know, right? The photo I used in my post is another favorite. They say so much without using words in this movie.

        And yes—Sleepless in Seattle! 🙂

  4. And why am *I* still unmarried?

Certainly I’ve been looking for my own “Jack”, but oddly I’ve pretty much just found “anti-Jacks”.

And then, no one has ever asked me.

Y’know that whole “it will happen at the right time” or “it will happen when you least expect it” or “stop wanting it” etc.? At 50, I remain unpersuaded.

I hope everyone finds their own Jack.

    1. Amy says:

Skye, at 44, I remain unpersuaded as well. I’ve come to a place of peace in my singleness, thank God. But I think there’s a bit of fairy-tale myth to the “when-you-least-expect-it” and “when-you-stop-wanting-it” theories. I don’t doubt that both of those have been someone’s experience. Not mine.

That said, I’d rather wait for Jack. And if he doesn’t show up, I refuse to settle for anti-Jack. 🙂

While You Were Sleeping is one of my favorites, too, and I also am madly in love with Jack. That gentle, unobstrusive, I-love-you-completely-and-will-love-you-forever thing he has going in just irresistible.
